Beach Days: A South Floridian’s Nostalgia in Southern Spain

Growing up in South Florida as a part of a large family, some of my fondest memories revolve around our family beach days. Living in the Sunshine State, where the summers are sizzling hot, the beach was our go-to for inexpensive and endless fun. My father, a native of Miami Beach, knew all the best spots, leading us to more exclusive beaches where we could both fish and swim in peace. Our packed lunches and drinks stored in a big cooler became a ritual, adding to the charm of those carefree days.
Fast forward to the present, I find myself raising my family in Southern Spain. My husband, hailing from Central Florida, shares my love for the beach. Together, we’ve continued the tradition of family beach outings with our children. From the shores of Malaga to the windy, sandy beaches of Cadiz, Andalucía offers some of the most stunning coastlines in Spain.
However, just like back in South Florida, many beaches here are crowded with tourists and bustling hotel scenes. For us, the perfect beach still embodies exclusivity and natural beauty. That’s why La Playa de Sancti Petri in Cadiz has become one of our favorites. Its serene and untouched charm reminds me of the special spots my father would take us to in Florida.
Despite our love for La Playa de Sancti Petri, our exploration of Spain’s beaches is far from over. There are still many more hidden gems and breathtaking places for our family to discover. Every beach day is a new adventure, continuing a cherished tradition from my childhood and creating new memories for my children to look back on fondly.
