When I think about Black History Month, I don’t just think about the monumental contributions of our people to society. Of course, I celebrate the ingenuity of Garrett Morgan’s traffic light, Frederick McKinley Jones’ refrigeration system, and Madam C.J. Walker’s entrepreneurial spirit, but I also reflect on the essence of Black culture. Our hair, our melanin, our strength, our music, and our laughter that fills a room—these are the aspects of Black identity that deserve equal celebration.
Why This Matters in Spain
Living in Spain adds a unique layer of meaning to celebrating Black History Month. It’s not widely recognized here, and at times, it can be challenging to be a Black family in a place where our history is not part of the cultural dialogue. However, this is precisely why creating these moments is so important—for our children, for ourselves, and for the wider community that surrounds us.
By hosting this year’s BBQ at home, we’re not just celebrating; we’re sharing. We are opening our doors to friends, neighbors, and loved ones to experience the warmth and richness of Black culture. This is our way of saying, “We are part of this community too.” It’s an opportunity to show our children that their heritage is something to be cherished and shared with pride, no matter where they are in the world.
A Time to Shine
So let’s toast to Black History Month 2025: a time to reflect on the strength and resilience of our past while celebrating the beauty and creativity of our present. From the inventions that shape our world to the music, food, and traditions that connect us, this is our moment to shine—and to share that light with those around us, right here in Spain.
